A once in a while visit to a SPA is not only a recommendation, but nowadays it's a necessity. Take advantage of the natural resources that Romania has to offer. Many spa resorts were developed near thermal springs, offering relaxation at very small costs compared to the normal western prices. They are a great destination not only for the ones in need for healing, but they are necessary for the ones with an overactive life and caught in the daily routine.
There are approximately 3,000 thermal springs in Romania, with a tradition that goes back in the ancient times of the Romans, who founded many of the spa resorts.
Băile Herculane is a treatment resort established by the Romans in the Cerna Valley, in the southern Carpathians. This is the oldest spa resort in
Romania, a place preferred by the roman aristocrats. Princess Sissi fell in love with this resort and in 1887 she stayed here for 6 weeks, at Villa Elizabeth (Vila Elizabeta). Today Villa Elisabeth hosts the local library, but unfortunately it doesn't look as good as it used to.
In the north-east of the country you can find the largest spa resort in Romania, Băile Felix. It's famous for its thermal springs and the mud, which are used in the treatment of rheumatic arthritis. Because of it's outdoor hot springs, the resort is also visited during winter.
Right in the heart of Transylvania, Sovata is another popular resort. Famous for its heliothermal lake - Lake Ursu - and the sapropelic mud, which in combination are the perfect cure for any gynecologic affection, rheumatism or for the peripheral nervous affections.
Other spa resorts in the mountain areas are Călimanești, Băile Olănești, Tușnad or Govora.
