Itinerary
Transfer from the hotel in Arequipa to begin your half day visit, passing by the Santa Teresa Monastery, also known as Carmen Monastery. The first stone was put in 1700, but was completed in 1710. The monastery keeps almost intact its colonial architecture. Inside the temple stands a beautiful stone baptismal font. The altar is made of embossed silver, Plateresque. The wonderful carved wooden pulpit is from the eighteenth century. In the sacristy there are beautiful paintings, such as "The Mercy" and "St. Teresa of Jesus," the founder of the Discalced Carmelites.
You will also visit the Juanita Mummy, discovered on September 8, 1995 by the anthropologist Dr. Johan Reinhard. Juanita was a beautiful girl of the Ampato volcano, whose altitude is 6380 m. approx. It housed in its womb for about 500 years or more. A beautiful Inca girl who at the time of death must be 13 or 14 years old, and it was at that age, when she was offered up to the Ampato Apu by the Incas priests and laid bare by the eruption of Volcano as a sacrifice. Continuing the route, we’ll see Next to the Rio Chili, where you’ll see the Franciscan convent “La Recoleta”. The original building dates from 1648 and was totally reconstructed after the earthquake of 1687. Inside there is a library of more than a 20.000 books and at the rear of the convent is a small Amazonian Museum, displaying handmade works of the tribes of the jungle and beautiful specimens of wild fauna. There is a mold fossil human skull, with a probable antiquity of half a million years old, one of the highlights is the most precious jewel of painting recoletana: a true picture of Van Dyck representing the "Descent from the Cross." In this Cloister is the Pinacotec, where you can admire old choir books of parchment, with Gregorian salmondias.
At the end of your visit, you will be taken to the hotel.
