Highlights / General details

Next to Rivas is Puerto San Jorge, a small fisherman town where you can take a boat trip to Ometepe Island, recently nominated as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. This is the largest fresh water island in the world, famous for its two volcanoes, Concepcion and Madera. Madera's volcano has an evergreen crater lagoon on top of it and, also a waterfall. Legend considers that this island or site is the indigenous Olmec's Promised Land, which they came looking for from Mexico during the 9th century. Ometepe is a paradise for watersports, fishing, bird watching and nature tours. It is also known for the archaeological stones and pre - Columbian statues. As Tahiti, Ometepe has the shape of a number eight.
