Kansai International Airport is built on an artificial island, southwest of Osaka. This project was the most expensive civil project in modern history. It took 20 years of planning, three years of construction with an investment of several billion dollars. The airport was officially opened on the 4th of September 1994 and it is the international gateway for the Kansai region in Japan, which contains the major cities of Kyoto, Kobe, and Osaka.
The total number of passengers in 2006 was 16,689,658 of which 11,229,444 were international. Each week there are 499 flights to Asia, 66 to Europe and Middle East, 35 to North America. It is the first airport in Japan to have installed AED (Automated External Defibrillators) devices, which can be used by ordinary citizens. Doctors are available for emergencies and first aid, and also there is a doctor is on call during the night.
If you happen to be stuck at Kansai Airport refresh your body with a full body massage, a facial or a relaxing foot massage. Send a post card to the ones at home from the post office and then you must do a quick shopping session at the duty free shops. If you're traveling with your pet, you can check it in at the Pet Hotel, so you won't have to worry. It operates 24 hours a day.
Kansai Airport has all of those little things that just make traveling more comfortable.
