When to go
All Year Round
Look forward to...
Staying in a fascinating ex-communist building, now beautifully converted to a magical guest house tucked away in a rarely-visited corner of Romania.
Learning about the dramatic history of this peaceful area from a local count.
Looking for bears in the wild foothills of the Carpathian Mountains.
Walking through the woods, past crumbling churches and bottomless lakes.
Feasting like a king in one of Europe’s most romantic settings.
This has to be one of the most exciting properties we've come across and fantastic option for anyone looking for a European destination that's not affected by the hike in the euro.
Imbued with history and set in 34 hectares of private parkland at the foot of the Carpathian Mountains, The Machine House, part of Count Mikes Estate, is a secret gem waiting to be discovered. Not your average villa rental, and certainly not your average villa rental holiday. A truly unique experience.
transylvanian guesthouse
Machine House sits peacefully in the Zabola region of Transylvania. What use to be an office building during the communist era has been transformed into a beautiful six bedroom rustic guesthouse that has mastered the ever popular 'shabby chic' ambience. Each double room has its own en suite bathroom, and a large dining room and lounge both with open chimneys are yours to enjoy for meals and winding down.
castles and lakes and plenty to do
Surrounded by majestic views of the Carpathian Mountains and huge swathes of open land you will escape all notions of city life, from police cars and buses to high rise buildings and groups of people hurrying to get somewhere. On the estate you will also find a large lake and a castle dating back to 1400 (a former children's home and hospital during the communist period), and behind the estate there is simply 50km of wilderness. So much to explore. And all on your own. Beautiful isolation? Definitely.
horse sleigh the romanian way
During your stay in this vast and beautiful eden you will have the choice of various activities, whether you decide to travel in summer or winter The Machine House will always be a magical and memorable place to visit. Tours of villages and the estate can be organised as well as visits to the only natural sulfur cave in Europe. Or, why not try a day in the life of a Transylvanian Shepherd? Believe us it's a goody and definitely a talking point for when you return home. If the place is laden with snow, discover the Carpathian Mountains by horse sleigh and travel through the magical valley stopping off for the occasional 'Gl?hwein' with the locals.
For something out of the ordinary, whether you're after a winter wonderland or a summer retreat, get one step ahead of everyone else and try something different.
