Where this culinary treat originated no one knows for sure, but the first Fish & Chips restaurant was opened in 1860, by Joseph Malin. There are many stories about how fish and chips merged, but according to one story, fried-potato shops spreading south from Scotland merged with fried-fish shops spreading from southern England and that's how they got together.
Since they appeared, fish & chips have been appreciated by the British population and they were considered to be a nutritious meal, offering value for money. And of course, the easy availability of fish and chips had a contribution to the development of the trade. And even today, with the growing of fast food industry, the traditional British fish and chip shop remains a leader in this field. There are now around 8,100 fish and chip shops across the UK.
