They’re internationally known for their big-city resorts, but Shangri-La can do remote island escapes with the best of them. Shangri-La’s Boracay Resort & Spa is proof of that — nestled into a lush green hillside, overlooking a pristine beach, surrounded by an a nature reserve on an island two hundred miles from Manila, it’s anything but urban, and its 219 villas, rooms and suites are the very picture of modern luxury-resort chic.
Exteriors are classic enough, but the interiors are modern and stylish, even if they’re locally crafted from indigenous materials. Balconies are standard, as are iPod docking bedside stereos and fairly large flat-screen televisions; the villas, meanwhile, are massive, and come with private decks or gardens, complete with plunge pools or jacuzzis, not to mention round-the-clock butler service.
As a full-fledged luxury resort this Shangri-La has more going for it than just some well-equipped accommodations. Four restaurants include a clifftop seafood venue and an Italian dining room up in the treetops, and three bars and lounges cater to everything from a quiet glass of wine to a bit of late-night dancing. There’s a fairly comprehensive spa and fitness center to boot, as well as a marine center with a full complement of dive offerings. Plan for seclusion: whichever airport you choose, you’ll need a car ride and a speedboat transfer to get here.
