Hotel description

Mollies on Tweed (you might guess by the name) is anything but the standard hotel experience. This charming little hotel is operated by Frances Wilson and Stephen Fitzgerald, a singing instructor and a designer of sets for opera productions, and bears their personal stamp through and through — antiques from their personal collections adorn the guest suites, and the opera students have been known to put on a show for the dinner guests.

The building itself was originally a private residence, built for Auckland’s first mayor, and staying here one feels more like a house guest than anything else. Once an all-suite property, Mollies has added some smaller studios, to accommodate those traveling alone — still, these are spacious, with en-suite bathrooms and a view of the courtyard garden.

Guests who opt to eat in dine together, in the dining room, at one long table, and can’t help but run into one another again and again in the bar, on the terrace, in the garden — but, remarkably, 24-hour room service is available, in case you are antisocial, or merely keep odd hours.

The location is quiet and suburban, in St. Mary’s Bay, and a short walk from Ponsonby Road and its numerous shops and restaurants. If you are in Auckland on business, the commercial district is a short drive away, and Mollies has its own conference facilities (as well as broadband internet access).

How to get there:

Mollies on Tweed is approximately a 30 minute drive from Auckland Airport.
