To call a hotel the Eden is hardly the dictionary definition of unpretentiousness, but don’t be put off by the audacity of its name; this Roman mainstay, for all its splendor, is remarkably discreet, its recently restored opulence never striking a crass note. Once a favorite haunt of the likes of Hemingway and Ingrid Bergman, today’s renovated Hotel Eden is again one of Rome’s top hotels.
Though just blocks from the Spanish Steps, ground zero for Roman tourism, the Eden is more sedate and dignified than the average luxury hotel, with an atmosphere more akin to that of a private aristocratic residence. Not a particularly small hotel-over a hundred rooms-it’s intimate all the same, with little of the big-business sheen of a modern hotel.
Guest rooms are handsome, and though they’re not sprawlingly large, the top-floor rooms look out over breathtaking panoramic views of the city, thanks to the Eden’s commanding hilltop position. Classical details like corniced ceilings and antique furnishings contrast well with a subtly modern decorator’s touch, just enough to ward off any dusty museum tendencies.
Some of the world’s finest shopping, dining and sights are within a short walk of the hotel, but it would be a mistake to miss the Eden’s rooftop bar and top-floor restaurant-La Terrazza is one of Rome’s best restaurants, with a view that can’t help but elevate the cuisine. And though constant demand makes Rome something of a hotelier’s market, the staff here hasn’t forgotten the golden rule of hospitality: though, as a guest, you may need them more than they need you, but they’ll never let you know it.
