At first glance, Argentina’s lake region looks a lot like Switzerland — crystal blue water, dramatic mountainscapes, impossibly fresh air, snow-capped peaks. That’s why it’s fitting that the Correntoso Lake & River Hotel feels distinctly European. This impeccably designed boutique hotel stands out among the rustic estancias and mountain lodges that dot the famous countryside of northern Patagonia.
Correntoso, perched on the banks of Lake Nahuel Huapi in the foothills of the Andes, started out in 1917 as a basic wooden cabin for fly fishermen. You’ll still find traditional woodwork here, tea and scones are served in the afternoons, and a certain proper, old-fashioned air still characterizes the place. But today’s hotel boasts a full range of contemporary amenities like wireless internet, an herbal hammam, two gourmet restaurants, and an infinity pool. The décor in guest rooms and suites is a blend of minimalist calm and cabin-like warmth — lots of blond wood and crisp white linen, oversized soaking tubs, candles, wildflowers, and picture windows revealing stunning views of the Andes. Most of the suites feature private decks that seem to hover right over the lake.
The more formal of the two restaurants, Gourmet, offers a wine bar and introduces Mediterranean ingredients into typical Patagonian dishes like trout and wild boar, while the more casual Puerto Correntoso, with tables on a wooden terrace, handles lighter meals and the lavish afternoon tea. The hotel’s “Spirit & Adventures” team arranges outdoor activities from hiking to champagne cruises at sunset. The gorgeous, state-of-the-art herbal hammam is worth a visit, preferably followed by a glass of Patagonian Malbec on the deck.
