Of the three Aman resorts in Bali, Amanusa is the closest to the archetypal Bali getaway. This is not to say it’s average, or even typical — this chain takes great pride in promising, and often delivering, the extraordinary — but unlike its more remote sisters, Amanusa is set on Bali’s southern peninsula, with a Beach Club on one of the island’s most spectacular stretches of coastline, and easy access to the more populous beach-front communities at Legian and Seminyak, as well as the capital city of Denpasar.
Most guests, however, will take little notice of what’s nearby, so immersive and secluded is the Amanusa experience. From the privacy of your sprawling thatched-roof villa, surrounded by classic Balinese craftsmanship and first-rate contemporary luxuries, you’d be hard put to even imagine you’re sharing this coastline with anyone. Suites come with massive four-poster beds, sunken soaking tubs and garden courtyards with outdoor showers, and eight of the villas have their own private plunge pools.
The Terrace restaurant makes the most of Amanusa’s hillside situation, serving Indonesian and Thai cuisine accompanied by far-ranging views over the Indian Ocean. There’s a Beach Club, with nine private cabanas, on one of the island’s finest stretches of sand, and Swedish or Balinese massages and body treatments are available here or en-suite. Diversions include two tennis courts and a 30m x 20m swimming pool, and no matter how isolated you feel, you can remain connected with the outside world — a high-speed wireless network is accessible from anywhere on the property.
How to get there:
Bali is very accessible with daily flights from most major cities in Asia and Australia. Travelers from the United States or Europe tend to fly via Singapore or Hong Kong. There are also domestic flights from the surrounding islands and ferry connections. Amanusa is a 15 minute drive from the international airport in Denpasar.
