This islands lies of the western coast of Sicily. Because of its butterfly shape, it is sometimes called La Farfalla. It covers and area of 20 square meters and the rough coastline is here and there interrupted by short stretches of sandy beach.

The main town on the island, with the same name, has a small port, surrounded by a beautiful bay. There are two main beaches, Lido Burrone in the south west and the sandy Cala Azzurra in south.

The island is famous for its tuna fisheries and also tufa quarries. Some of the old quarries are now caves and near the sea, along the east coast, some of them have been partly flooded by waves. The most spectacular quarries are those grouped around Scalo Cavallo, Cala Rossa and Bue Marino.

Divers have plenty to admire, as the underwater flora and fauna is quite rich. Some of the best places for diving are Punta Marsala, Secca del Toro and the rocks off Punta Fanfalo and Punta Ferro.
