Situated on the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, Sian Ka'an Biosphere has a total surface of 1.3 million acres and it's the largest protected area in the Mexican Caribbean. It has a very rich fauna and flora, containing 336 bird species, 103 mammal species, tropical forests, mangroves and marshes. This biosphere is also an important nesting site for two endangered sea turtles species.
On January 20th 1986, the became a part of UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Program and it is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
There are 2,000 inhabitants in the reserve and three large zones where human activity is limited. These three areas cover an area of 700,000 acres and the are known as the Zonas Nucleares of Muyil, Cayo Culebras, and Uaymil.
Tourists are mesmerized not only by the raw beauty of the reserve and its flora and fauna, but also by the miles of hidden and pristine beaches.
