Guadalevín river runs through the city, dividing it in two, carving the steep El Tajo canyon.
Three bridges, Puente Romano, Puente Viejo and Puente Nuevo, span the canyon. The construction of Puente Nuevo started in 1751 and it took 42 years to complete. It's the tallest of the three bridges, measuring 120 meters. Below the central arch there is a room, which served for different purposes, including as a prison, during the civil war. Today, in this chamber there is an exhibition where you can find out about the history of the bridge and its construction.
