This spectacular geyser is located in Te Puia park, in the Whakarewarewa thermal reserve in Rotorua. This volcanic valley was formed in 1886, when Mount Tarawera errupted. During one day, Pohutu erupts several times, about once an hour, shooting up to 30 metres high.
Meaning big splash or explosion, Pohutu is the most famous geyser in the Whakarewarewa Thermal Valley and is the largest active geyser in New Zealand and the southern hemisphere.
