Situated near the town of Helsingør, famous from Shakespeare's "Hamlet", Kronborg Castle is one of the most important Renaissance castles in Northern Europe. It was added to UNESCO's list of heritage sites in 2000.
The castle started as a fortress, built in the 1420 by the king of Denmark, and later on a number of buildings were added, forming the castle. The castle acquired its current name only in 1585, when it was rebuilt by Frederick II and transformed into the magnificent Renaissance castle, unique in its appearance and size throughout Europe.
