The palace is the official residence of the monarch of Scotland. The palace is the setting for state ceremonies and official entertaining. It was founded in 1128 by King David I of Scotland as an Augustian monastery, known as Holyrood Abbey. Since than, it has played an important role in Scotland's history.
Later on, it was rebuilt by James V of Scotland, becoming the new home of his daughter. A new west front and a tower were added to the palace.
Charles II rebuilt it again after the Civil War and the palace became a showplace of baroque architecture and interior decoration. Visitors to Scotland were drawn to it for its beauty and also for its association with Scotland's past.
The palace can be visited all year round, except when the members of the Royal Family are in residence. Usually, Queen Elizabeth II spends one week in residence at Holyrood Palace at the beginning of each summer.
