This defensive fortification wall in northern England was built in AD 122, during the rule of emperor Hadrian. It was the first fortification built across Great Britain, the second one being the Antonine Wall. The second one is known less because its remains are less evident today.
A significant portion of the wall still exists, particularly the mid-section, and for much of its length the wall can be followed on foot by Hadrian's Wall Path
It is the most popular tourist attraction in Northern England and it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
The exact reasons for the wall's construction are not known, but a number of theories have been presented, all of them mainly centering around an expression of Roman power.
