In 1896, the Archduke of Austria, Luis Salvator encouraged geologist Edouard-Alfred Martel to explore these caves. Even though he wasn't the first one to discover them, he was the one to perform scientific exploration and he also mapped the entire underground chambers.
The caves have twelve main areas and different chambers, such as the Black Cave, the White Cave and the Luis Salvator Cave. They are of a remarkable beauty, with weird formations reaching down from the ceiling and growing up from the floors. Thousands of tourists visit the caves each year to see these strange rock formations and to feel the tranquility surrounding the place.
The Caves of Drach enclose the largest underground sea in Europe, the 177 meters long Lake Martel. While visiting the cave, tourists are taken to a large room, where a small boat comes in a silent rowing, with a few musicians performing classical music. The acoustic conditions and the unusual ambiance, will make you want to visit this place again and again.
