Butchart Gardens

This garden used to be a quarry, property of Portland Cement. After they've exhausted the limestone in the quarry, Jennie Butcher, wife of Portland Cement's owner transformed it into a beautiful garden. Originally it was called Sunken Garden, but it changed its name into Butchart Gardens years later. This was happening around year 1904. Inspired by their travels around the world, by 1908, the Butcharts have created a Japanese garden, an Italian garden and a beautiful Rose Garden. The fame of the garden quickly spread, and people were coming from all over to admire it. By the 1920s more than fifty thousand people per year came to see her creation.

22 hectares filled with 700 species of plants, that bloom from March until October. Approximately one million visitors come each year, enjoying not only the floral beauty, but also the lighting displays.
